FAQ about Powercopy's hard disk copying and image creating program

Copying hard disks under Windows

  Powercopy online HELP file

Frequent questions about Powercopy's DOS Boot CD (don't confuse with the hassle-free Windows Boot CD):

Topics:

FAQ Powercopy freezes while an image is created(very very seldom) DOS only:

Error sources:

A) The FREE-DOS operating system of the Boot CD does not work on your computer.

FREE-DOS has developed meantime into a very stable operating system but does not yet match the quality standard of MS-DOS7. Free-DOS's High Mem Driver continues to have problems with the A20 line of the memory management.
Alternative:
Booting via MS-DOS7 with RAM disk is more stable. However, we are not allowed to deliver this OS on account of licensing reasons.
Simply create a start disk in WIN98/ME and boot from this disk.
Add hard disk USB2.0 support to start-files.

B) FAT32 Partition of target drive is corrupt.

Diagnosis:
Check target drive under Windows with chkdsk or scandisk(Win9x/ME) for errors.
Perform a simulation operation by clicking on Powercopy's Function Menu point 'D'  (Determine the size of the image file [Simulate]).
This operation runs independent of the target file system in use. If Powercopy continues to freeze, the following could be the reason..

Diagnosis:
Use Bios Default/Standard settings.

FAQ External hard disk drives:
XA) External drive is not addressed. See HELP 7.1

XB) What is the drive letter of the external drive?

In Powercopy Version 2.1Rh and up the following applies:
It must be assured that the external drive is formatted with FAT32 and that it contains the PoCpyExt directory.
Using the +Key, the drive letter may then be found in the dialogue "Select drive A to Z".
The drive letter will then be shown in the dialogue.

XC) How to format an external drive with FAT32
See HELP 7.2

FAQ Network connection:
NA) Copy speed at 100Mbit/s and TCP/IP is less than 5MB/s

The opposite station is likely an XP computer. Install the XP Patch which is on the Boot CD, in the FAST_DOS_TCPIP_to_XP_Server directory.
Alternatively you may install the  NetBeui protocol. Be sure to observe the safety regulations in your network. In companies where NetBeui is not permitted, it's best to install a second network card and to activate the Netbeui protocol only on this card. Using a Crosslink network cable you may thus set up a Peer-to-Peer NetBeui network connection.

NB) No connection to the Windows network
Has the network protocol also been installed on the opposite station?
Perhaps the access rights for the DOS-Client user (User name/Computer name) have not been properly configured.
Has the Windows Firewall been unblocked for this computer name?

FAQ copy speed:
CA) The speed is less than 8MByte per second in the case of a local hard disk copying process.

Possible cause: Ultra DMA is not BIOS-supported.
Option A) Activate the UDMA feature in the Option Menu (Menu 2 of 3).
Option B) Install an additional PCI card for hard disks, such as a Promise Controller. They are available for around 20 Euros and feature UDMA-support.
