Technical background
Physical max. interface speed | Supported parallel
modes highspeed 20Mbit/s ECP (IEEE1284) bidirectional (SPP/EPP) slow speed 200kByte/s Used transfer mode of sender and receiver may be different | USB
15Mbit/s fast mode( only archivable if no low speed device like mouse keyboard occupies the bus) 1,5Mbit/s slow mode | Normal Printer Mode, 4-Bit Nibble max 0.8Mbit/s |
Interface | parallel (8bit bidirectional) | USB(universal serial bus) | parallel 4 Bit |
Info for IT professionals | Programmed
in C++(VC1.52,VC5) no ocx or additional dll used, occupies very less system resources.
Own high stable NT/2000/ XP driver. | ||
Operating systems | ME, Windows98, Windows95, DOS, WfW3.11, NT4 / Windows2000/ XP | ME, 2000, Win98,Win95(second edition required) USB Spec 1.1 no NT4 no DOS Support | LL3: DOS |
Are long filenames(>8.3) supported? | Yes | Yes | DCC Yes, LL3 no |
Installation | Driverless
except NT/Win2000/ XP In less than 2 minutes installed, no reboot required. (for the Turbo mode you should have activated ECP in your bios) | needs
driver, about 30 minutes installation time, more than one reboot neccesary. | driverless
at LL3. DDC needs setup and driver. |
Operating area | Supports NT/Windows2000/ XP /ME Windows98, Windows95, DOS, WfW3.11, Win3x. Mix of OS allowed! Also useful if the system will not run under the graphical user interface(save mode)! | Only Win9x/Win2000/ XP connection possible. No NT/DOS/Wfw/ | LL3:
programmed for pure DOS useful for small system repair PC-DCC:Only Win9x connection possible! |
maximum transfer speed | Upto 1200kByte/s ! effective transfer speed | upto 800kByte/s | upto 100kByte/s |
File exchange with.. | ... right mouse button at every Windows file dialog or explorer dialog! The easiest way!. | ... single Drag and Drop Application | LL3: file
exchange using a very uncomfortable file dialog. -permanent connection.
Rest of the system unavailable during data exchange. PC-DirectCableConnection: - slow speed >0.08Mbit/s If you could setup it, you will have a very slow connection. |
Additiona functions | Additional
DOS/Windows features like /cd /md. 6 different transfer modes, file, date and size filters... Powercopy Professional has additional features like fileserver and file signature functions!!!. | no | --- |
Transfer protocol | 100% CRC32 transfer | unknown or not available | LL3: sure transfer,
checksum mechanism unknown. PC-DirectCableConnection: unknown mechanism |
Office automation | Yes,
for example daily backup etc. Super for time sheduled backups. Powercopy has 40 user selectable options for automation purpose. | no | LL3:
no PC-DirectCableConnection: no |
Known problems | Powercopy
runs on 100%, if they have a bidirectional or the highspeed ECP parallel interface
(all > 1990). On some systems Powercopy comes in conflict with Office95, but this problem can be solved by disabling the single file transfer feature at setup. One model of compaq Elite80486 notebook will not work in highspeed mode (bad ECP Implementation). Compaq notebooks prior 1998 requires Year2000/BIOS update for highspeed ECP connection and newest "Computer Setup Program". | Needs
USB1.1 on both computers! Not possible on the first WIN95 releases. No DOS support.
No support for file exchange under Linux, OS2, BeOS During evaluation we had problems with our Notebooks to switch to standby mode, if the USB driver is active. | LL3: A ggod
program designed in 1990, never updated to newer systems. During file transfer
no other applications should run. PC-DirectCableConnection: Uncomfortable handling. No chance to use it for file exchane under Linux, OS2... |
Result | Powercopy provides all the features you need. | USB solution is good if you will manually copy your data. | For seldom file exchange either LL3 or PC-DirectCableConnection is useful |

Support | If you should
have any installation problems, we will solve them together. We have contact persons in the states. Installation support can be provided by telephone and email in english and german language. We do not know, whether Powercopy runs on languages with writing from rigth to left and chineese or arabian, but normally it should also work there. |
