Connect hard disk properly!

Mainboards with black (parallel) ATA hard disk connector:

These mainboards are designed for 40-conductor cables. However, 40-conductor cables should definitely be installed only on systems with black (P)ATA hard disk connectors.

It is best to use the Master/Slave jumpering on these mainboards to determine which hard disk will be the master (first) and which one the slave (second).

The following is a general rule to be followed:

Jumper the hard disk as master and connect to end of the IDE1/2 (channel 1) cable.

Jumper the CD drive as master, too, and connect to the end of IDE 3/4 (channel 2) cable.

Thus the speed of the hard disk is not reduced down to the CD ROM's speed.

If an additional hard disk is added, you should jumper this one as slave and connect it to the center connector of the IDE 1/2 (channel 1) cable.

Mainboards with blue (P)ATA hard disk connector:

These mainboards are designed for 80-conductor cables. 80-conductor cables may be used up to UDMA133.

Important: Avoid the use of round cables since these cables are only a marketing gimmick!
It must be ensured that the cable is not laid flat (lay cable loosely), otherwise there will be high-frequency cross-talk interference and the system will be forced to slow down since the UDMA mode and thus the maximum (burst) speed is bound to be reduced.

It is best to use the CS(Cable Select) jumpering on these mainboards to determine which hard disk will be the master (first) and which one the slave (second).

The following is a general rule to be followed:

Jumper the hard disk as CableSelect and connect to the end of the IDE1/2 (channel 1) cable.

Jumper the CD drive as CableSelect, too, and connect to the end of the IDE 3/4 (channel 2) cable.

If an additional hard disk is added, you should jumper this one as CableSelect and connect it to the center connector of the IDE 1/2 (channel 1) cable.
